Hampton and the Military Community Are On a Mission

Hampton and Langley AFB seek citizen input to plan our future together!

Joint Land Use Study

The City of Hampton and Langley Air Force Base are on a collaborative planning operation to sustain the economic vitality and safety of Hampton, without compromising the operational mission of the installation.

To accomplish this task, a cooperative land use planning effort conducted through a Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) project has been underway. A team has been assembled to develop and implement strategies for reducing the impacts of incompatible activities on the community and military operations. Tools to support compatibility in the future have been devised and a draft plan has been developed.

Now we need your help. The City of Hampton and Langley AFB are seeking input and guidance from citizens on this draft plan.  The public is asked to submit comments and feedback on the plan online or at one of four public input meetings.

The first input meeting will be held in the Hampton City Hall Council Chambers on Wednesday, July 21 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Citizens are encouraged to review the draft plan online at www.hamptonlangleyjlus.com prior to the meeting.  Citizens will have the opportunity to provide feedback online July 6 through August 6.

Previous JLUS efforts have directly benefited both the community and the installation by:

  • Protecting the health and safety of residents living or working near military installations.
  • Preserving long-term land use compatibility between the installation and the surrounding community.
  • Promoting comprehensive community planning.
  • Encouraging a cooperative spirit between the local base command and local community officials.
  • Integrating the local jurisdictions' comprehensive plans with the installation's plans.

We need the Hampton-Langley study to join this list of successful missions. With your help it will be mission accomplished.

About JLUS

A Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) is a cooperative land use planning effort conducted as a joint venture between an active military installation, surrounding cities and counties, state and federal agencies, and other affected stakeholders. The JLUS collaboration is funded through the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA).
