Hampton Has Second Most National
Board Certified Teachers In Virginia

December 14, 2005

Sixteen additional teachers from Hampton City Schools have become National Board Certified. With a total of 42 National Board Certified teachers, Hampton now has the second largest percentage of National Board Certified teachers in Virginia, trailing a division from Northern Virginia by less than half a percentage point.

National Board Certification is authorized through NBPTS (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards), which requires applicants to complete an extensive portfolio and take a very detailed assessment in the area of the certification they are seeking. The portfolio process itself takes 150-300 hours to complete, and teachers must demonstrate how they stimulate student learning.

The proud educators making the mark this year are: Susan Ailsworth (Burbank), Charles Barhite (Bethel), Suzanne Jones (Bassette), JoAnn Molnar (Syms), Cathy Pape (Burbank), Maria Putzke (Bassette), Debbie Reddy (Phillips), Michelle Rice (Machen), Wendy Horchler (Asbury), Sherry Smeland (Jones), Kelly Sowden (Kraft), Kari Stohler (Langley), Joseph Sweat (Jones), Shirley Sypolt (Cooper), Tracy Tocco (Kraft), and Sophie Wall (Kecoughtan).
