Newmarket Creek Flooding Efforts

October 12, 2006

Recently, a number of citizens attended a public meeting hosted by Congressman Bobby Scott to discuss how flooding from Tropical Storm Ernesto had affected their lives. Hampton city staff is in the process of assessing what can be accomplished now and in the future regarding flooding.

Public Works crews are continuing to conduct a clearing and snagging operation along Newmarket Creek to remove debris and undergrowth that may cause blockages. Hampton is working with Newport News to conduct a similar operation in Newport News and to coordinate the cities' future operations to maintain a clear creek.

The City has hired a consultant to study Newmarket Creek and develop flood management alternatives. A citizen committee is being created to work with staff and the consultant on this study.

The City is also planning to expand the mitigation program for homeowners, and is already helping some homeowners raise their houses above flood elevation. The City is expanding this effort to consider home buy-outs as well. The initial application period will take place between November 1 and December 31 with application review done in time for inclusion during next year's budget process.

In addition, the cities of Hampton and Newport News are working jointly with their faith-based communities to provide assistance to those individuals and families who lost belongings due to Tropical Storm Ernesto. To learn more about this program, citizens can call 727-6884.
