Project ChildSafe PartnershipIn an effort to raise awareness about the importance of practicing safe gun handling and storage practices among gun owners, the Hampton Police Division has partnered with Project ChildSafe, a nationwide firearms safety education program. In doing this, we are able to provide our citizens with firearm safety kits at no cost. These kits include a cable-style gunlock as well as a safety curriculum. We encourage all of our citizens to stop by our Community Relations Unit inside the Hampton Police Division located at 40 Lincoln Street to obtain their free gunlocks, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. There is no limit on the number that you may obtain. These gunlocks can be used on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal of the gunlock is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in the home. Project ChildSafe is a program that was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). It has distributed more than 35 million firearm safety kits throughout the country since 2003. The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice Grant, with additional funding provided by the firearms industry.
