Remember to Recycle During the Holidays!

December 19, 2007

There are many ways to make this a green holiday season, so read through the ideas below and then contact the Hampton Clean City Commission for additional information.

As you gather with friends and family, try to purchase recyclable food and drink containers, and then make sure they end up in the recycling container! Flatten everything you can to get the most out of the space in your recycling toter. If you want to recycle but don't have curbside service, contact the Hampton Clean City Commission for options.

Remember that most of our boxes, some of our wrapping paper, and all of the wrapping paper rolls can be recycled. Flatten them and put them in the recycling toter!

Don't know what to get that special someone who has everything? A nice native plant, a donation to the Keep Hampton Green Fund, or an energy efficient light bulb are all possibilities! For your neighborhood a nice Adopt-A-Spot might be just the thing!

Need a stocking stuff for someone who smokes? The Hampton Clean City Commission has free portable ash trays - just stop by during office hours and pick one up! Other stocking stuffers - Clean City Commission pens, book bag tags, rulers, and an assortment of other small items.

If new electronic equipment is on your list this year, "do right" by the old stuff. Take computers to Planet E Recycling Solutions on 58th Street and bring old cell phones to the Clean City Commission to be recycled by Recellular.

When all the presents are unwrapped and it's time to say farewell to your live-cut Christmas tree, you have two options. You can place it at curbside for collection by Hampton Public Works or you can take it to the nearest public school for collection by Hampton Parks & Recreation. Trees collected by either department will be taken to the regional Composting Facility to be turned into mulch.

The Hampton Clean City Commission will be open this work week 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (regular office hours), and will be open Christmas week Wednesday through Friday. New Year's week we'll be open Monday the 31st and Wednesday through Friday.
