Rhet Tignor Announces Retirement

Rhet Tignor At the July 18 Council meeting, Councilman Rhet Tignor announced his plans for retirement, effective September 30th, from the Hampton City Council. Tignor has been a member of City Council since July 1, 2000. For the decade prior to that he served on various commissions and boards in the city.

Tignor is a retired Air Force officer and the retired owner of Rhet Tignor Business Forms Company. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Hampton University and a Master of Science in administration from The George Washington University.

Tignor also holds a variety of memberships and affiliations including the Governor's Urban Policy Task Force; Executive Committee of the Virginia Municipal League; founding Vice Chairman of the Virginia First Cities Coalition, and later Chairman; Vice Chairman of the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Board of Directors; Citizen Advisory Board Member of the Hampton Correctional Facility; Board Member of the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula; Board Member of the Office of Human Affairs; Board Member of the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center; Member of the Hampton Finance Committee; and a contributing Gold Life Member of the NAACP.

Tignor's term ends June 30, 2008. The Hampton City charter requires that the vacancy be filled by a majority vote of the remaining council members. If the council fails to act within 60 days of the occurrence of the vacancy, a majority vote of the Hampton Circuit Court judges will fill the vacant seat.

"It has been a great honor to serve the citizens of Hampton. However, I look forward to spending more time with my wonderful wife, children, grandchildren and friends," said Tignor.
