A Grease Control Device (GCD) slows the discharge time so that grease and water will separate, and grease will remain in the device while water continues to the City’s wastewater collection system.  Most FSEs are required by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code to have some type of GCD.  All FSEs contributing large amounts of grease to the sewer system will be required under the FOG Ordinance to reduce their grease output.

Devices include:

    • grease interceptors (usually outside underground)
    • grease traps (usually inside)
    • automatic grease removal devices

If the GCD is not cleaned frequently or correctly, it will not perform properly and could put your establishment at risk of violating the city’s sewer use ordinance.

Here’s a breakdown of Hampton’s GCD requirements based on the City Ordinance:

    • New Establishments:  FSEs will be required to install, operate, and maintain a grease control device in compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

    • Existing Establishments: FSEs may continue to operate and maintain their existing GCD as long as it is being properly maintained and not found to be contributing FOG in quantities sufficient to cause line stoppages.  Installation of a GCD may be required if the FSE is found to be contributing FOG in excessive amounts.

    • Renovations or expansions: The FSE must meet the requirements of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code.

    • Retrofitting: FSEs must install a GCD if required by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District.
