Remember these simple kitchen practices:
- Just can it! The best thing residents can do to help Public Works fight FOG is to always remember to pour extra grease in a grease can, not in the drain. An old soup can makes a perfect grease can. Simply pour the grease in the can, place the can in the freezer, and dispose of the grease in the trash once it hardens.
- Avoid using the garbage disposal. Garbage disposals only chop up greasy food which doesn’t prevent it from sticking to the sides of the pipe.
- Use sink strainers. Dispose of food particles caught in the sink strainer in the trash can.
- Scrape and Dry Wipe. Always scrape your dishes of any food scraps before washing. It is best to wipe greasy dishes with a paper towel and dispose of the towel in the trash during kitchen clean up. Think of how much grease would be diverted from the sewer system if everyone in Hampton wiped away even one tablespoon of grease a day.
- Recycle fryer grease
