Advisory Groups: engage young people in community decision-making. The Parks & Recreation Department asks youth to guide staff in plans for parks and programs. Youth leadership groups are organized in each secondary school and in neighborhood districts to address important issues and tackle youth concerns. Leadership training: for all youth within the community including youth commissioners, youth advisors and youth planners. Several agencies work with young people to provide training and opportunities to serve and to get involved. Alternatives, Inc.
MonART: offers young people and adults a chance to explore their creative expression through realistic drawing. The extensive and fun curriculum gives anyone the skills to draw successfully. Students feel safe to experiment and learn within an environment free of criticism or critique. Alternatives, Inc.
Teen Center Volunteers: From tour guides to instructors, the Hampton Teen Center will need a large number of youth to help newcomers feel welcome, to demonstrate games and equipment, and to assist with day-to-day operations. Hampton Coalition For Youth
Uth ACT: (Youth Achieving Change Together) involves a diverse body of youth in improving the community by supporting, promoting, and funding youth-led service and activism. Uth ACT is a Youth Network in partnership with other Hampton youth-led groups. With Uth ACT young people are connected to seven other sites across America that create youth-empowered social action. WORD! Magazine: An inspiring, youth-written and produced magazine focusing on youth-led social action. Word! keeps youth informed about what’s going on in their world, and right here in their own backyards, by highlighting social issues through the eyes of young people. Join the WORD! youth staff and write about things that you are passionate about or pick up an issue to stay informed about today’s hot teen issues. Word! is also available on-line at www.yl-va.org. Youthinc: A coalition of youth and adults whose purpose is to advocate for the rights of young people in Hampton. Youthink’s vision is to see every young person respected, involved, and included in all aspects of life. Currently, Youthink is working on improving and increasing the number of meaningful employment experiences for youth in the city of Hampton. Big Brother Big Sister: Be a shoulder to lean on and an important young adult in a young child’s life. (Enter your zip for local BBBS office. Must be 18 to become a big brother or big sister.)
Volunteer.org: Many different volunteer opportunities in the Hampton Roads area as well as other parts of the U.S.
Fire/Rescue Volunteer: Work closely with those who put their life on the line to save others.
