Renovations—to convert the space for teen center use—are expected to take several months. In the meantime, several agency partners and young people are working with an architect to determine the best space usage and programs. The city is also making decisions around staffing, priorities and outside funding. A Teen Center Board (made up of teens) will help make policy decisions for facility use. An online gift catalog to fund wish list items and a capital campaign are being developed to equip the building with a cyber café, recording studio and other special features. America’s Promise selected Hampton, Virginia in 2007 as one of the top 100 youth-friendly communities in the U.S. Also winner of the Josten’s “Our Town” Award-Winning Community and the Innovations in American Government Award, Hampton is a national model for youth civic engagement and youth development.
