HYC has broad representation--24 high school youth from four public high schools in Hampton and independent high schools attended by Hampton youth and home-schooled teens.
Members go through an intense interview process and are selected by youth and adult members. They serve on the commission until they graduate or voluntarily resign their positions.
Commission members represent young people’s ideas and opinions in the city’s planning and decision-making process.
The Commission allocates funds for other youth-related activities and acts as an advisory board to City Council and other groups.
HYC is under the Coalition for Youth, a city department that champions youth issues.
There is one designated adult staff responsible for coordinating the Commission. There are other adults in the city government who consider the commission as part of their job responsibilities and attend HYC meetings. They are: the Director of the Coalition for Youth, the Director of the Planning Department, and City Planners who work with the Youth Planners.
Alternatives, Inc., a non-profit partner in the community also assigns a staff person who is responsible for monitoring the group’s progress and developing the training needed. This person attends all HYC meetings and helps keep things focused and fun.
Youth Planners and a Youth Secretary also help the HYC staff. The Commission Chair, Vice-Chair and Committee Chairs comprise the Executive Team. The two groups meet every week to stay on top of the action.
There is also a group of adults who help make sure that HYC is successful. They consider it their responsibility to "trouble shoot" problems or to consider politics and other possibilities. They include city officials from Parks and Recreation and the Neighborhood Office, and directors from Alternatives, Inc. and Hampton Public Schools.
