Hampton’s premiere Teen Center—a dream for ten years—is well on its way thanks to the input of thousands of citizens. The City of Hampton bought a two-story fitness center for $2.8 million in 2006 for use as a new teen center. By January of 2008, the city is scheduled to occupy the 39,000 square-foot facility. Renovations to convert the space for teen use will take several months. When complete, it will be the most unique and innovative space for youth as it will not only be for teens but it will be run by teens as well!
There are several agency partners and young people working with an architect to determine the best space usage and programs. The city is also making decisions around staffing, priorities and outside funding. A Teen Center Board has been organized to help make policy decisions for facility use. >>>more
A wish list is being developed to equip the building with a recording studio, art room, career café, game arcade and other special features.
The facility is centrally located, in easy access of main roads & bus routes.
It will meet ADA standards with an elevator, doors, drinking fountains, restrooms and parking when complete
Young people, under the guidance of the Youth Commission and youth planners, will serve on the governing Teen Center Board, in a variety of advisory roles and in day-to-day operations and security of the facility. Community partner, Alternatives, Inc., has recruited teens from each Hampton City high school. The group has recently begun meeting and has established a set of core values for the new teen center already!
